Canberra households will have to pay an average extra $142 in water and wastewater charges next financial year, under pricing determinations announced by the Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission.ICRC senior commissioner Paul Baxter said the charges reflected additional costs associated with water security projects being undertaken by ACTEW and reduced levels of demand for water.

“For an average household consuming 250 kilolitres of water per year, the total water and wastewater bill will increase by 11.73 per cent in 2011–12, that is approximately $142 for the year,” Mr Baxter said.

“Ultimately the cost of providing water services in the ACT needs to be recovered through the price per kilolitre charged to consumers.”

ACTEW signalled its intentions for a $100 price rise in January.
